Runners Can benefit From Wearing Compressions Socks

Originally compression socks were designed for people who sit for extended periods of time. Compressions socks stimulate blood flow.  However, many runners are now using compression socks when they race, and for their cooling down periods with excellent results.

Many runners rightfully question whether compression socks are just a passing fad, or do they really help the runner? Many runners wear compression socks because they do increase blood circulation in the legs. The increased blood and oxygen that is reaching the legs reduces leg cramps and allows the runner to keep going longer.

The runners that wear them say that their shins and ankles are better supported, and therefore the likelihood of becoming injured is reduced.  The socks should also be worn after a training session or race during the cool down process. This will prevent blood from accumulating in the veins and reduce after race cramps. If you are running two races within a short period of time compression socks keeps circulation flowing and your legs will be fresher for race two.

Additional benefits of compression socks for runners are more oxygen is delivered to the leg muscles and lactic acid is removed from the legs faster. While there are no studies that yet prove the benefits of compression socks for runners, there certainly are many athletes wearing them. Most runners suggest that you wear the socks up to three hours after a race to reduce leg fatigue and cramping. Many runners, report having fresh legs the morning after a race when they cool down with compression socks.

Compression socks work by applying graduated pressure, more being at the foot. This aids in blood flowing back to the heart. This has the effect of oxygenated blood constantly feeding the muscles of the leg. Many times compression socks are worn by patients who have just undergone surgery to decrease the risk of life threatening blood clots. Patients at risk of developing or have DVT are typically encouraged to wear compression socks by their doctors.

Since runners have been touting such success with compressed socks, skiers have jumped on the bandwagon as well. Furthermore, they are becoming increasing popular with triathlon athletes too. As mentioned, there are no conclusive studies yet available to back up the benefits of compression socks by runners and other athletes. However, those that try compression socks appear to be sticking with them.
