How To Choose Diabetes Meters

Monitoring glucose level is very important for people who have diabetes as well as women who are pregnant and who are having trouble with controlling blood sugar. There are a lot of different diabetes meters that diabetics can use to monitor their blood sugar, so a diabetic could have some trouble figuring out which one they should get for themselves. Finding the right diabetes meter is going to be based on a few different things.

Function

The meters analyze how much sugar is in a person’s blood sample that the machine reads. Some of the machines are simple and they only provide one reading which the user has to write down so that they can compare. There are others, however, that store the readings that have been put into it. So it really depends on what you are looking for in a monitor.

Kinds

The sizes of the meters range from small to large. The decision that a patient makes depends on if they are able to handle the functions of the machine. Another thing that helps people to decide on the kind is the size and amount of the sample that’s needed.  The one that requires a smaller sample of blood can cause less pain than the ones that require a larger sample, and another spot on the body can be less painful than the finger to use.

Considerations

One consideration is the cost when someone is choosing between the meters. If supplemental or medical insurance is used to offset or purchase a machine, the patient has to figure out which of the machines are going to be covered by the plan being used. Meters that are bought outright need to be compared for the cost of the supplies and the machine, since that is what is going to be used continuously.

Which monitor is chosen by the patient is really a personal choice, although some doctors might give recommendations. Often cost is a factor, if the person doesn’t have adequate health insurance that will cover it, or the function of it, if the person is older and not able to handle something big or small.  Remember these three things above when you are looking for a diabetic monitor and they will help you to choose the one that is right for you.  You can also ask other diabetics which one they recommend and which they have had good experiences with.
