Helping a Loved One Deal with Urinary Incontinence

When a loved one has urinary incontinence, it can be an embarrassing and difficult problem to deal with.  Whether the problem is temporary, such as after surgery, or permanent, there are some things you can do to help your loved one handle the problem with dignity.  There are a variety of products that are specially designed to deal with the problem of leakage.

While at home, the incontinence problem can be most severe overnight.  While sleeping, many patients are unable to get out of bed quickly when they need to go to the bathroom.  To help with the situation, place a mattress cover over the mattress.  Choose a cover that is waterproof so that any leakage won’t harm it.  Then, use waterproof bed pads that will collect any leakage that occurs overnight.  The pads are designed to be disposable, so you can simply toss them away in the morning.

There are several types of undergarments that are designed to accommodate those with urinary incontinence.  Choosing one of these products will help eliminate the embarrassment that often happens when leakage occurs.  Choose from various types of adult diapers that can be used overnight or during the day.  Styles are available for both men and women.  No matter how bad the problem is, using the right type of garment will certainly give you back the freedom to get out and about again.

Along with protective undergarments, you can also use disposable washcloths.  These handy items are designed to safely and easily wipe away any urine residue.  The washcloths are similar to baby wipes, however, they are designed for adult use.   They can be easily carried in a purse or backpack.

The key to conquering urinary incontinence is to reduce the embarrassment associated with the problem.  While surgery may be a possible solution, it is certainly not the answer for everyone.  If the situation worsens, a catheter can be recommended to assist in getting the problem under control.  In the meantime, most people simply need to learn how to best deal with the problem.

To stay active, consider wearing adult protective underwear whenever you go out.  Choose adult diapers that work best for the type of leakage that you have.  Always remove a used diaper promptly to avoid odors.  Use washcloths and odor eliminating spray to keep you odor-free.  Carry extra products discretely in your purse or bag so you’ll always be prepared.
